Garage Kits
Garage kits come in many forms, with the vast majority providing a slightly more complete protective barrier than a carport.

Choosing your garage kit will come down to the size, cost, materials, and ease of assembly, especially if you will perform the construction. A typical steel garage kit will come complete with all the steel parts needed to construct the garage. This generally includes wall and roof structural components, metal sheeting, roofing, doorways, and thorough instructions. Not usually included is the cost of the foundation, permits and labor.
In most cases the most economical option is to survey the suppliers within a couple of hundred miles of the job site and obtain competitive bids. Some prefab building providers will also quote a price for a turnkey completed building, or they work with a short list of preferred contractors. Be sure to read the fine print regarding what the kit includes; who is responsible for the cost of such items as permits, engineering (if required by the local building jurisdiction), and the material and labor cost for the foundation. Often the cost of the steel garage kits turns out to be less than 50% of the total finished cost of the garage when all other associated costs are considered. It is always advisable to check with the local zoning ordinance to insure that the size and location of your proposed building is allowed.

Although many steel building kits are labeled as simply a one or two car garage kit, they can obviously serve other needs: for general storage or as a home shop. In fact most suppliers offer custom design options such as different garage door designs, placement and sizes, as well as storage trusses options.
The available options in garage kit packages are extensive. Many DIYers prefer an all wood garage kit, since that type of construction is more familiar to them. Many of the larger chain builder’s supply stores can provide a quote for wood garage kits. As is the case with any other kit, the quoted price will probably just include the cost of materials for the walls and roof, and will not include the slab and foundation costs.
