Pole barn construction is one of the more affordable barn designs and may be easily adapted to a variety of site conditions.

Advantages of Pole Barn Designs

Less Excavation Required: Foundation and excavation costs can typically exceed 15% of building costs with conventional construction methods. Since with pole structures, the building is supported by poles embedded into the earth, the costs of excavating for a perimeter foundation, the steel for reinforcing the footing and the concrete footing are saved.

Concrete Floor Optional: Although placing a concrete slap is easily done with pole barn construction, this is optional since a slap is not for structural purposes. For this reason, grading a perfectly flat building site is not required as the length of the poles may be adjusted for grade irregularities.

Less labor Required: Because of the unique nature of pole construction, and the lack of a need for concrete forming, placement and finishing, pole barn buildings can be erected quickly, and with less less skilled labor.

The Basic Sequence of Building a Pole Barn

The Preliminaries-Before Starting the Actual Construction

Determine the Size and Style of Pole Barn Desired:Be sure that the building size and proposed location conform to local zoning regulations.

Acquire a Complete Set of Plans: The cost of a set of pole barn plans is minimal and will help to insure that the structure is built with adequate framing members and critical connections. Before purchasing a set of plans make sure that the plan provider will include the proper engineering documents to ensure that your plans take into consideration the snow, wind and seismic condition in your area. If you have decided to purchase a pole barn kit, often complete engineering, specific to your local site conditions and building jurisdiction, is included with the kit.

Obtain a Building Permit if Required: In some regions of the country, barns and other agricultural buildings are exempted from the requirement to obtain a building permit. It is important to research this in your area, as the penalties for building without a permit can be severe.

Now to the Actual Pole Barn Construction:

Determine the location of the Building and Layout the Post Locations: In addition to making sure the placement of the building conforms to local zoning ordinances, avoid placing it in low-lying areas subject to poor drainage. If you are required to obtain a building permit, the placement of the building should be consistent with the approved site plan on the permit.

Drill the holes for the Poles: Depending on the required embedded depth of the poles, this can be done by manual digging, gas-powered portable post hole diggers, or wheeled equipment with hydraulic-operated augers.

Set the Corner Posts: If the plans require that the poles are embedded in concrete brace the posts in position and wait 48 hours.

Set All remaining Posts: Ensure the walls are straight and true by using string attached the corner posts.

Install Truss Carriers or Roof support members: A typical framing scheme involves bolting a pair of members to the top of the poles. These members in turn support the framing elements that span the roof (typically roof trusses or rafters).

Roof Framing: Install roof framing per plan. Depending on the design, the roof framing system might be either roof trusses or roof purlins with rafters.

Install horizontal Wall Framing:This will include the girts for siding support and the grade board along the bottom of the posts.

Install Roof Sheathing: In many cases metal roofing is used and this attaches directly to the roof trusses or rafters. If composition shingles are used, plywood or OSB sheathing must be attached first.

Install Wall Sheathing: This may be plywood or metal siding. In some cases siding is left off completely and is not required for structural reasons.

Install Doors and Windows: In some cases, these are installed prior to the wall sheathing; refer to door and window manufacturers installation instructions for installation details

However, once you’ve chosen the metal garage kit that will go in on your property, it’s important to establish and complete the right kind of building process. Here are some tips to help you put up your new metal garage successfully and quickly.

The Kit

When you get your metal garage building kit, you should take it apart and count out all the pieces and materials to be sure everything is present. You should also be sure you have the necessary materials for foundation setting, as some kits do not come with the cement or gravel needed for this process. Additionally, be sure your metal garage kits are complete with instruction manuals and that you are set up to put it together on your own. Some kits are large enough and demanding enough that you may need professional help – or at the very least a friend to help with the heavy lifting.

Your metal garage kit should include the raise arches, arches, end wall panels, weather stripping, the proper heavy duty curved angles, and all the tools and nails needed to complete the process. Anything missing should either be ordered or acquired from the hardware store you purchased your kit from.

Laying Your Foundation

After you’ve gone through your materials and the instructions, it’s time to lay the foundation for your metal garage kit’s construction. You’ll need a solid, durable foundation. This means the right soil conditions and material for the foundation should be chosen. A swampy area of your property with gravel foundation isn’t going to cut it. Find a flat, well drained patch of land where you can lay a wide, solid cement slab to ensure durability.

Building Your Metal Garage Building

The building itself needs to be formed by putting up your raise arches and build arches. There’s a good chance you’ll need some help putting your arches up. Many metal garage buildings are large enough that the upper arches are far above your head and can be heavy in some cases. Even if you feel you can handle it alone, be aware that things like leaks or weak joints can lead to damage to the garage, and possibly whatever you place in it if you’re not careful.

Once you’ve put up the arches, you need to place the wall panels. The panels should be pre-cut to fit exactly together. There should be numbered openings and positioning for each of them, with bolts that connect directly to the base connector and arch panel.

When you start looking for the ideal metal garage kits, make sure you choose options that will not only suit your particular needs, but that will work on your property and can be installed using the labor you have at hand. Bring in friends, read instructions carefully, and take no shortcuts and your garage should last a good long time.

There is something intrinsically appealing about a basic wood garage kit. It offers a traditional looking structure to your property that is easy to craft, inexpensive, and portable if necessary. Compared to a permanent garage, which can cost thousands to build, and can never be grown or moved, a wooden garage kit is a much more effective solution for many home and property owners.

The Benefits of Wood Frame Garage Kits

Say you just moved into a new home on a decent sized piece of property. You don’t have a garage and would like to create extra space for storage and to keep your car safe and dry in the raining season. The cost of contacting and hiring a contractor is often many times greater than choosing from prefabricated wooden garage kits, which have already been measured and cut from the materials of your choice. Because of the nature of these kits, there are almost always enough sizes, wood types, and construction styles available to meet your needs.

Siding for wood garage kits will vary greatly, with basic cedar as well as a more protective vinyl siding available for those that want to avoid any weather damage once their garage kit has been assembled. Floor plans for wooden garage kits are also a bit easier to work with because they are more flexible and easier to adjust than steel frames which cannot be altered with special cutting equipment.

To top things off, wood garage kits generally match the style and look of your home. Many people do not want a steel extension to their home as it does not match, cannot be painted, and offers minimal room for customization.

Choosing from Wood Garage Kits

When it comes time to choose from the different wood garage kits on the market, you need to determine what factors are most important for you. Determine the ideal size of your wooden garage first. This will affect what the final cost will be. Second, determine what foundation materials you’ll need. Generally, this includes concrete and some measure of steel to anchor your wood framed garage kit to the ground against any potential weather that might arise.

Once you’ve determined the size and foundation of your garage choose the wood and floor plan you like best and you can start researching companies to find out who offers the best prices and best warranties on their products.

A garage is a structure that provides shelter for vehicles. Over the years, a garage has taken on new functions. It is not solely used for storing cars anymore but has become more of “storage” area for bikes, garden tools, and unwanted house furniture. It is also used for storing seasonal décor like Halloween and Christmas. It is sometime used as dad’s “den” where he keeps his tools and setup a portable TV to watch his favorite NFL team. If all these are in one garage, then where will the extra car be?

There is always a need to extend a garage or put up a new one. From a builder’s point of view it is most certainly easier to build a new separate garage. Part of the hassle of a house extension is the tearing down of existing walls and roof. It is also time-consuming to trace existing electrical and plumbing lines to tap the new construction to an existing building.

To answer the need for an extra garage, there are plenty of residential steel garage kits available in today’s market.
The first thing that you should consider when planning on building an extra garage is the size. Do you want a one-car garage? A two-car garage? A three-car garage? A one-car garage defeats the purpose of an additional garage as it’s too small. A three-car garage may be too big to be accommodated in your yard. A two-car garage sounds about right as there are plenty of two car garage kits available in the market.

Decide if you want your garage attached to your house or for it to be free standing. It is better to have the new garage built as a new structure to avoid disruption in the household routine.

Next, decide if you prefer to build from scratch or buy a DIY garage kit. If you build from scratch you need to buy a set of floor plans and hire a subcontractor to do the hard part in erecting the garage. Note that most states require that you secure a building permit when building a garage. If the garage is a separate structure an additional permit might be needed to connect the new garage to utilities. If you have a contractor, his bid and services should include this detail.

Even if you have the capability and the tools to DIY your garage, you would still need some help in digging the foundation, pouring of concrete, and roof framing. Although building a residential steel garage is easier and faster to build than a regular concrete and masonry one, some help is still in order.

Constructing a steel garage would add value to your property. You won’t have to worry about termites and woodworms, rot and splits as a metal garage is practically indestructible in these aspects. Cost and energy efficient, a steel garage can save you money in the long run. You can save as much as 50% compared to the cost of a traditional garage.
The best part is, steel garages requires no maintenance and are guaranteed for 50 years!

A carport is a roofed and wall-less shed that could either abut from the side of a house or built as a separate structure within the lot. Most homes have either a garage or a carport but more often than not, there is always a need to build that extra carport (or extend the garage) to house the two to three cars of an average household.

If you have a limited budget but you still want a more than adequate protection against the elements for your car, then your best option is to erect a metal carport. There are several types of open carport designs and specifications. You need to source out the best metal carport design that will suit your needs.

Before you start with your building plan, you need to allocate a space in your lot for the carport. Measure the area where you plan on building the carport. Once you have the dimension of the allotted space you can now choose the size of carport that you want. You have a lot of options for your carport plan. Choose the best metal carport that would suit your needs and the also the contour of your lot. While you’re at it, it is best to check out the local building codes regarding construction of a metal carport. Generally, local laws classify such structures as outbuildings that do not need permits but check anyway as local codes vary.

Erecting a metal carport is cheaper and easier than building a wooden or concrete one. Building a carport can be classified under the do-it-yourself “carport” category that is why there is a myriad of metal carport kit available in the net. Choosing a kit should entail such considerations as: the annual snow load; the general wind velocity; the annual precipitation and such related areas. This only means that do not choose flimsy and cutesy carport kits as they will not last long. True, canopy carport kits are easy to put up but will they last long? Choose kits that are sturdy as metal kits can last for a long time.

If you are not a regular DIYer and would like to hire someone to do the set up, by all means get a contractor to do the job for you. However, most companies that sell metal carport kits do installations for an additional fee. When buying your metal carport kit, ask if the company does installations. It may even have a package deal for such arrangement where you buy the kit and the seller set it up for free. Ask. Who knows?! You might get lucky.

In case you plan on setting up the carport kit yourself, make sure that you don’t hit any utility lines i.e. water and electrical lines during excavation. Yes, excavation is needed for the foundations. If this work is beyond you, you can hire someone to do the foundations while you do the rest of the installations.
Putting up a metal carport is easy. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to do it.
